A Wild Western Golden Hour: Kay & Pete’s 1-Year Anniversary Shoot at Elmley Nature Reserve

There is something completely magical about the Kent wilderness in late summer. So, when Kay and Pete asked me to photograph their one-year wedding anniversary at the breathtaking Elmley Nature Reserve, I knew we were in for something special.

An anniversary session is such a brilliant way for couples to relive the magic of their wedding day. Getting to revisit the exact venue where you said "I do" brings back all those overwhelming feelings and emotions, but without any of the fast-paced timeline pressure of the big day itself. You just get to slow down, look at each other, and celebrate making it through your first year of marriage.

And let me tell you, it was clear to see the love between these two from the absolute get-go. They were totally psyched for the session, and they brought a brilliant, unique vision with them: a full-on Western theme.

Kay kept referring to Pete as her very own Rip Wheeler (a Yellowstone reference that was admittedly lost on me at the time, but I’ve since looked it up and it’s a massive compliment, Pete!). They both rocked incredible Stetsons—Kay looked stunning in a flowing black gown, and Pete looked absolutely smashing in jeans, cowboy boots, a sharp blazer, and his hat. Against the golden, sun-bleached grasses of the reserve, they looked like something straight out of a modern romance movie.

We focused the session around the gorgeous shepherd's huts just up from the car park where they were staying for the weekend. It was a lovely, warm September evening, giving us the perfect canvas to chase that glowing, warm golden hour light.

My usual natural movement style worked like an absolute charm with them. Because my approach to couples portraits is all about gentle guidance rather than stiff, robotic posing, we just let them move. They spent the evening walking through the reserve, holding each other tightly, and eventually, they even started dancing right there in the wilderness while playing music through their phone.

Like anyone, they had a brief moment at the start where they felt a tiny bit nervous about being in front of the lens again. But that’s exactly where a guided approach comes in. I stepped in with one of my favorite behind-the-scenes photography tricks to break the ice, and it cracked them both right open into the most genuine, full-bellied laugh. That’s the exact magic I look for—unscripted, honest storytelling.

The standout moment of the entire evening had to be the Champagne shot. Popping a bottle of bubbly with the vast, stunning backdrop of the nature reserve stretching out behind them was the absolute perfect way to cap off the night.
